LinkedIn Profile Photo Background: Clean It Up for Free

Swap a messy background for a clean solid or brand colour in your LinkedIn profile photo. Best colours, sizing and crop tips, free and in your browser.

A professional headshot on a clean solid colour background

Your LinkedIn photo is tiny, but it shows up next to every comment, message and application. A cluttered kitchen, a cropped-out friend's shoulder or a busy office behind you distracts from your face. You don't need a photographer to fix that: you can replace the background with a clean colour in a couple of minutes.

What makes a good LinkedIn background

Size and crop tips

LinkedIn displays profile photos in a circle. Common guidance at the time of writing is to use a square image of at least 400 x 400 pixels, with around 800 to 1,200 pixels per side for crisp results on high-resolution screens, in JPG or PNG and under LinkedIn's file size limit (widely reported as 8 MB).

Don't forget the banner

The background banner behind your profile photo is a separate image. If you use a brand colour behind your headshot, a matching or complementary banner makes the profile look deliberate. Just keep enough contrast so the circle doesn't disappear into the banner.

Mistakes to avoid

Privacy before you upload

Phone photos can contain GPS coordinates and device details. LinkedIn is one of many platforms, and the same headshot often ends up in CVs, email signatures and company websites where metadata may not be removed. Cleaning the file once covers all of them.
