Does Discord Remove Metadata From Images? (What to Know Before You Post)

Does uploading an image to Discord strip its EXIF and GPS metadata? Here's what Discord keeps, what it removes, and how to make sure your location isn't leaked.

Short answer: don't count on it. Discord does not reliably strip metadata from every image you upload — and in many cases the original EXIF and GPS data stays in the file that other people can download. If your image has location data you don't want to share, the safe move is to remove it yourself before posting. Here's what actually happens.

What Discord does with your image

Discord may re-process or compress some images (for example, thumbnails), but the original file you attach is often kept available for download. That means anyone in the channel can grab the original — and any EXIF metadata, including GPS coordinates and device info, may come with it. Behaviour varies by client, file type and size, so it's not something to rely on for privacy.

Why this matters

• GPS location: many phone photos embed the exact coordinates where they were taken — potentially your home.
• Device and timestamp: EXIF can reveal your camera, phone model, and the exact date/time.
• Public servers: on a large or public Discord, anyone can download your original image and read whatever it carries.
