Does Telegram Remove Metadata From Photos? (What to Know)

Does sending a photo on Telegram strip its EXIF and GPS data? Here's what Telegram removes, what survives when you send as a file, and how to be sure before you share.

Short answer: it depends on how you send it. When you send a photo on Telegram the normal way (as a compressed photo), Telegram re-encodes it and most EXIF metadata, including GPS, is dropped. But if you send it as a file/document, the original — location data and all — goes through untouched. Here's what you need to know.

Sent as a photo vs. sent as a file

• As a photo (compressed): Telegram re-compresses the image, which strips most EXIF metadata, including the GPS location. This is the usual way people send photos.
• As a file / document: Telegram keeps the original file intact to preserve quality — so the full EXIF, GPS and device data are still inside and anyone can read them after downloading.

Why you shouldn't fully rely on it

Stripping only happens on the compressed path, and behaviour can vary by app version and platform. If a photo's location is genuinely sensitive — you're sending it to someone you don't fully trust, or it might get re-shared — don't leave it to the app. Remove the metadata yourself first, so the file is clean no matter how it's sent.
