How to Make a Cut-Out YouTube Thumbnail (Free, No Photoshop)
The cut-out face is the single most common trick in high-CTR YouTube thumbnails. Here's how to make one for free — remove the background and drop yourself on any design.
Look at almost any thumbnail with a strong click-through rate and you'll spot the same technique: the creator cut out of their background and layered over a bold, simple design. It works because the subject pops instead of blending into a noisy room. Here's how to do it without Photoshop and without paying for anything.
Step 1 — Cut yourself out
- Take (or pick) a photo with a clear expression — exaggerated reads better at thumbnail size.
- Open Skrubly's AI Background Remover and drop the photo in.
- Keep the Transparent option and download the PNG.

- Canvas: 1280x720 (16:9). Anything smaller will look soft.
- Place your cut-out to one side, leaving the other side for text.
- Use a bold background — a strong flat colour or a simple gradient beats a busy photo.
- Keep text to three or four words in a heavy font. If it's unreadable on a phone, it's unreadable.
Step 3 — Make it survive the small size
Most viewers see your thumbnail smaller than a postage stamp. Shrink your design to about 15% and look at it: if the face reads and the words are legible, it works. If not, simplify — fewer elements, bigger face, shorter text.
Why the cut-out matters so much
A face in its original room competes with the background for attention; a cut-out face against a flat colour has nothing competing with it. That contrast is what makes the thumbnail readable in a crowded feed — and it's the reason nearly every large channel does it.
