Does Snapchat Remove Metadata? Chats, Stories and Memories

Does Snapchat strip GPS and EXIF data from snaps, chats, Stories and camera roll uploads? What others can see, what Snap keeps, and how to stay private.

Snapchat feels private by design, with disappearing messages and a camera built into the app. But what about the hidden data in photos and videos, especially ones you send from your camera roll? Here's what happens in each part of the app, based on Snap's published policies and independent testing, as of the time of writing.

Snaps taken in the Snapchat camera

Photos and videos captured inside Snapchat aren't taken by your phone's normal camera app, so they don't start with the usual full EXIF block from your camera roll. That doesn't mean location isn't involved: Snap can use your device location for features like filters, Snap Map and location stickers if you've given permission.

Chats and Stories

Independent tests by privacy tool developers report that Snapchat strips EXIF metadata, including GPS, from the copies it sends to other users, including photos shared from your camera roll. In practice, the person receiving your snap doesn't get a file with your coordinates in it. The original in your camera roll is untouched and still has all its metadata.

Memories and exports

Memories is Snapchat's cloud backup. Snap keeps information about when and where Memories were taken so it can sort and show them. When you download your data from Snapchat, many users find the exported files have no date or location embedded and that the information is stored separately in a data file instead, which is why so many people struggle with exports showing the wrong dates in their gallery.

EXIF data is rarely the main way Snapchat users reveal their location. Snap Map can show your live location to friends if you've turned it on, and location stickers and captions reveal places directly. To check, open Snap Map, tap the settings icon, and turn on Ghost Mode, or limit sharing to specific friends.

Practical privacy checklist

• Turn on Ghost Mode unless you actively want friends to see where you are.
• Review Snapchat's location permission in your phone settings; Snapchat works without precise location.
• Remember screenshots and screen recordings exist. Disappearing doesn't mean unrecoverable.
• Look at what's in frame: house fronts, street names, school logos.
• Clean files from your camera roll before sharing them anywhere, especially outside Snapchat.
